TNC wants to support civic engagement efforts across the network as neighbourhood centres prepare for the upcoming 2018 provincial and municipal elections.

Please join us for one or both of the following free sessions on March 21.

Morning Session: 9:30am – 12pm (doors open at 9:15am for coffee and refreshments)

Civic Engagement in Programming

This session will give frontline staff the confidence and tools they need to make space for Civic Engagement in their existing programs, from community kitchens and gardens to ESL classes and language circles to healthcare workshops. Using a hands-on approach, the facilitators will walk staff through steps on how to integrate civic engagement into their existing programs. Participants can expect to:

  • walk out with a tailored ‘lesson plan’ to try out in their program

  • learn about tried and tested civic engagement activities from the past federal and municipal elections

  • discover existing resources, engagement tools and community partners to support activities back at their organizations

This session is designed for:

  • Frontline Staff who might not feel like they have the ‘expertise’ to facilitate civic engagement conversations

  • Coordinators and Managers who are interested in taking back these strategies to share with staff at their agencies

Please note we can accommodate 4 staff from any one agency.

Networking Lunch: 12pm - 1:30pm

Meet community partners and learn about various resources, campaigns and initiatives to engage with or connect to program participants and community residents.

Open to participants attending morning and/or afternoon sessions. But please note, if you will be sending different staff to the morning and afternoon sessions, we can only host 4 staff from any one agency for lunch due to capacity.

Afternoon Session: 1:30pm – 4:30pm

Identifying Synergies and Building Connections

The afternoon session will focus on connecting participants around the United Way’s 2018 Call to Action which TNC has endorsed. The United Way platform includes a call to:

  • Fully implement the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission

  • Build an economy with fair and equitable opportunities and decent work for all.

  • Create pathways out of poverty by ensuring that everyone has income security and the supports they need to live with dignity.

  • Ensure affordable, appropriate and safe housing is available to all.

  • Invest in inclusive, healthy communities with affordable and quality childcare and public education, pharmacare and dental programs, transit and transportation, and community programs and services.

Together we will:

  • assess what's already happening on the ground around the call to action items

  • explore synergies across neighbourhoods where agencies can partner and TNC can amplify and support

  • connect with resources and community partners to support agencies actively engaged in the United Way's 2018 Call to Action

This session is designed for:

  • Staff who support their agencies in doing community engagement work

  • Anyone from the morning session who is interested in staying on

Please note we can accommodate 4 staff from any one agency.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON CAPACITY: We can accommodate a maximum of 4 staff from any one agency for each session, including the Networking Lunch session. The 4 staff can be different for the morning and afternoon sessions but if they are different, please note that we can only host 4 of them at lunch. Thanks in advance for understanding and helping us work within our capacity. If you're interested in being added to a wait list for any of the 3 sessions, please feel free to contact Sree:
